Tobacco Planter

Bemis Two Row Trans planter (Tobacco Planter)

This Bemis style tobacco planter was used for planting one row at a time of young tobacco plants. The planter was manned by three people. Two planters sat on low seats on either side of the row. The planter opened, closed, and watered each plant. Trays of plants were in front of each planter and the plants were inserted in the opened trench alternating between the two planters.

This 1/8 scale model is fabricated by the Conestoga Wagon Works craftsmen from copper and wood parts and is painted green. It measures  12 inches long and five inches wide.

The optional mule teams are hand carved by Tom Grassel, a long time farmer who lives in Conestoga, PA. The rough carvings are done by Dennis Herr. The prototype of this model was used by Tom and friends as little as three years ago. The mules are carved from bass wood and the harness parts are handmade from leather.
